How To Find Out Supplemental Pages In Google Index

September 10th, 2007 · No Comments · Search Engine Marketing ·

I was asked today by a colleague about how to find out the number of indexed pages which are in supplemental results.

Okay, Google doesn’t show the “supplemental” tag any more. Is there still a way to find out how many of your index pages are in supplemental status? Yes.

  1. Find out the number of indexed pages.
Type in “site:yourdomain.com” in Google search box would do.
  2. Find out the number of pages in Google main index
Type in “site:yourdomain.com-abc:yourdomain.com” in the search box; “abc” is used to trigger the supplemental results. You can use strings like “xyz” as well.
  3. Do a simple math to find out the number of supplemental pages in the index.

What are the factors that may increase your supplemental ratio?

  • Duplicated contents
  • Short contents (less than 100 words)
  • Reciprocal links

To improve, you need to produce quality links and quality contents. However, you shouldn’t be upset for being in the supplemental results. Less is better than never. Besides, there is a reason behind Google calling them “extended databases” instead of “supplemental” now. Check out this post about recent discussion during search engine strategies San Jose earlier on about supplemental index.

Here is a tool to help you do all the above calculation: Supplemental Index Ratio Checker
